Sony’s London warehouse burned to the ground in riots

The Sony Enfield warehouse and distribution centre was torched by rioting ratboys last night. There are several vidoes on YouTube. Comments include that 750 people have lost their jobs (not sure what this means).

Sony is due to hold a press launch event in south London, just one mile away from the Ealing and Clapham riot zones, early next week. We are booked into a hotel in Kingston on Thames (our expense, not Sony – thought that if we had to travel 350 miles to see whatever new stuff was around, we might as well spend a couple of days visiting our former capital city to remind us why we decided to move to rural Scotland 23 years ago…)

We may decide to call that one off. Will be contacting Sony today.

Our thoughts are with all those unlucky enough to be trying live alongside alongside these morons.

Water cannons are slow, only really work for large crowds, and the Met Police don’t have any.

Sony press release says they are still identifying cause, and building is still “smouldering”

Without wishing to politicise this site, the topic has been raised and this is an interesting petition for those of us who are UK tax payers

    ‘Robust response’? I doubt it.

The Met police can only cope with soft targets (like peaceful protestors, photographers, and videographers). When it comes to real criminals, they don’t do a darn thing.

    Too much work for them.

99% of the rioters will get away with it, and have a nice bounty, too.

They may be morons but they are also criminals. We shall see whether the promised robust response tonight is indeed robust. Our Home Secretary eschews the use of water cannons preferring policing by community consent!! I imagine most communities would happily consent to the use of water cannons or plastic bullets on these gangsters who have already destroyed a number of lives.

If we get new users posting pictures of the riots VERY close up, be suspicious!

Does it affect camera sales though? Reuters says it was CD/DVD’s http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/09/sony-fire-idUSL3E7J918O20110809.

Not that I have ever found Sony’s UK stock to be significant, at least of a-mount products.
