Firmware updates for Alpha 77, Alpha 65, NEX-7, NEX-5R, NEX-6

Sony has released internationally valid firmware updates for both the Alpha 77, Alpha 65 and NEX-7. Both updates have similarities, mainly adding a menu item to lock the Movie button and prevent accidental video takes. This is more important than it might seem, as the Sony memory card structure only permits video or stills to be accessed depending on which function was last used. Having accidental movies shot is frustrating, having to delete them before resuming still picture review has doubled the frustration. Now this issue is solved, but leaving many other Sony models in both Alpha and NEX ranges unmodified.

Revision October 18th 2012: as we check and re-check the Sony UK support site, more firmware updates have been released for Alpha 65 (title of this post amended!) and they are expected for A37, 57, 33 etc as well. We will add new cameras to this page rather than making new posts.

The firmware update omits the one function most demanded by movie makers – a fixed or user-set gain for the microphone, or for the mic socket. This exists on the Alpha 99. Having a permanent Auto Gain on the 7 models means they are unsuitable for most video work, where Nikon and Canon cameras have this vital simple control to prevent poor sound quality. The firmware was expected to add at least a fixed gain, possibly a simple hi/lo or three-step gain, ideally a multi-step adjustment. In the end, we get no change on this front, leaving Sony lagging behind with current models that are not functional for one of their principal functions.

The new firmware is Version 1.06 for Alpha 77 and 65 and version 1.01 for NEX-7.

The Alpha 77 upgrade also adds in-camera lens correction support for the SAM 30mm f/2.8 Macro, SAL 50mm f/1.4 (and presumably for the Minolta/KM equivalent with the same lens identity), the SAL CZ 24-70mm f/2.8 SSM, SAM 28-75mm f/2.8, SAL 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM, SAL 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM, SAL CZ 16-35mm f/2.8 and SAL 35mm f/1.4 G (again, presumably also correcting the Minolta/KM lens with the same identity number).

There are initial reports of a faster response, and faster image review time, supported by other Sony sources (Sony UK does not list these). Changes like this are normally accompanied by minor improvements in image quality, as the firmware has to be addressed pretty deeply rather than just tweaking a few parameters. Nothing gets to work faster unless it’s re-coded and that is good news. This is a near 64-megabyte program download, and not all of that is used for the updater part of it which runs on your Windows or Mac machine (exact specs are given on the links, and 64-bit is not supported so you need an old laptop or something like that to do your updating, if you have current systems – we always keep an older machine around for exactly this reason).

Specific additional claims which have surfaced include faster start-up and/or shutdown, more responsive front and rear wheels (?), improved auto review response, better AF performance with the new 500mm G, and better AF with scenes including bright areas.

Much the same applies to the NEX-7 firmware update, to version 1.01, which gives exactly the same Movie button disable/enable menu item (and lack of audio control update) along with improved performance using wide-angle lenses (which must at present mean the 16mm f/2.8, and perhaps the 24mm f/1.8, as no other lenses exist which can be called wide-angle and also work with the NEX-7 – the 10-18mm new design isn’t yet compatible). Auto bracketing is extended to 1, 2 or 3EV plus/minus and auto review of the image taken is made more ‘responsive’. The behaviour of the moving Flexible Spot AF marker is improved (?).

Auto review is not a minor function on the NEX-7 as sequence shooting may be speeded up in the process, or viewing through the EVF when shooting in motor-drive mode made tolerable. Users will have to report back as to whether this is the case.

There are lens firmware updates for the NEX-5R and NEX-6 – these add the SEL 18-55mm, SEL 18-200mm, SEL 55-210mm, and SEL 24mm f/1.8 CZ to the PD-AF compatible choices:

Comments

Where we have put (?) that’s because the difference is not defined and we’ve never noticed any particular shortfall in performance, or heard any complaints about these aspects. Therefore we would assume this was ‘collateral benefit’ – an improvement which has come about through tweaking other functions. And it is reasonable to assume other collateral benefits may be present which Sony considers too slight to mention, or simply wishes not to refer to.

From past experience it is always worth doing these updates and there is no risk to your gear if you read and follow the instructions carefully.

Added after upgrading our Alpha 77, making test shots before and after:

ISO 1600 noise/grain from firmware 1.05 – 100% clip sRGB, 1/13th at f/5.6 as metered

ISO 1600 noise/grain from firmware 1.06 – 100% clip sRGB, 1/15th at f/5.6 as metered, conditions identical, focal length 45mm not 40mm as first shot

Processing – ACR 7.1 with all NR and sharpening turned off, all parameters zero, linear, Adobe Standard profile etc.

Although there is no difference in the noise grain ‘size’ on examining a range of similar shots made from 1600 to 12800 ISO, the overall comparison favours the 1.06 update as having slightly less saturated colour noise and less tendency for blotchy green areas. With NR controls there is no great difference but 1.06 seems to be marginally improved.

1.06 changes the raw file data structure enough to yield a different metadata view. It adds a 350dpi resolution container, and fields to report GPS data in EXIF (whether or not GPS is active) which appeared for the image taken after the update, and do not appear in the shot taken beforehand, when checking metadata in Photoshop. There certainly is no great improvement but there are also more changes than Sony provide details for.

64-bit and 32-bit

On dPreview and other sites, some users state that the updater will work under 64-bit systems such as Mac OSX Lion and Mountain Lion. If it does, they are lucky and this is not a guaranteed fact. We tested the updater for Alpha 77 using several Mac systems and there is a significant difference in the time taken for the Mac to recognise the camera if a 64-bit system is used. In one case, a MacBook Pro would not communicate reliably with the camera regardless of the cable used and the state of reboot/clean environment. If the updater program does not immediately communicate with the camera and access the memory storage (red light flashing for several seconds), do not risk doing the update. The correct state of communication between host computer and camera is very fast indeed, moving between the steps of the update with no delay. Only the actual ‘run’ process takes a few minutes, during which time a progress bar will move steadily. If you have difficulty getting the updater to complete step one do not keep retrying on the same machine. Please note that for Mac users, there will be ‘device removed’ pop-ups appearing which are not mentioned in the instructions. These can be dismissed without any risk.

 

Alpha 77 and 65 Firmware 1.05 released

A new firmware update further boosts operability of the α77 and α65 Translucent Mirror cameras from Sony.

Available for free download from 29 March 2012, firmware version 1.05 adds several enhancements to both cameras. Alongside heightened responsiveness, it improves operability of both cameras with a wider choice of A-mount optics by Carl Zeiss and Sony.

Shading and aberration compensation

Both cameras can now intelligently correct vignetting, lateral chromatic aberration and distortion for a total of 11 A-mount lenses, including a further six models that are now supported:

Improved responses

Operability of both cameras is further improved with a number of refinements that facilitate smoother, faster handling.

  • Auto review responses are now quicker, without a ‘processing’ message being displayed
  • Time between power switch operation and power off has been shortened
  • Front/rear dial responses are improved

Autofocus responses and precision

Autofocus accuracy is now improved when focusing on scenes with wide contrast difference between objects. In addition, AF speed is improved when using both cameras with the recently-announced SAL500F40G 500mm F4 G SSM super-telephoto lens by Sony. You’ll be able to focus faster on athletes, wildlife and other distant subjects with this bright, high-magnification lens that is available exclusively to order.

Sony Alpha 77 & 65 Firmware v1.04 download

The download is approximately 65MB of data in a Mac .dmg mountable disk image, or some other stuff for Windows.

The process will take about seven to ten minutes overall including downloading, opening and completing the procedure. You need a battery for the camera with at least three bars showing – preferably fully charged – and your computer to camera USB cable. The actual transfer to the camera takes about four minutes follow by 30 seconds of internal processing.

During the Mac update, you may see this window when the camera is turned off for the upload from computer to camera, and at the end of the process:

Do not worry about this – it refers only to the Mass Storage connection. Do not let this distraction interrupt your process.

Example: correcting the 16-80mm CZ lens wide open at 16mm – focused on an A2 target, a very close distance which exaggerates the distortion level of the lens:

Above: in-camera correction. For full size versions which allow you to examine the CA (very prominent at f/3.5) and the degree to which it is corrected in the Fine JPEG, click the images. As you can see the image is enlarged by correction, so not quite as much coverage is achieved. But it’s less than you imagine; a fully corrected 16mm shot ends up being similar to a 16.35mm lens on the vertical and horizonal axes, or a 16.55mm lens on the diagonal. That’s still wider than a rectilinear perfect 17mm, so it’s better to use a bendy 16mm than lay out for a Zeiss MF 18mm, if you want coverage. And even Zeiss 18mms show some curvature.

We’ve tested the 16-50mm as well and BOY does that lens distort at 16mm – far worse than the CZ – which makes it clear that the in-camera lens correction goes hand in hand with this lens. To get any kind of straight line image, it’s going to be necessary to use the correction or a profile for raw conversion in a program like Adobe Camera Raw which accepts lens profiles.

The responsiveness of control wheels changing settings is greatly improved – altering +/- EV compensation for example now responds almost in real time as you shift the control. No significant improvement can be detected so far in image quality despite the claims, at least with the 100 or so test shots we’ve taken at different ISOs using a Color Checker, and other spot checks for Low/Normal/High NR. But there are so many modes on the A77 including panoramas, multishot, DRO, that the improvement may well be specific functions which Sony will explain in more detail.

Sony UK’s live Q&A webcam sesssion

A recording – advance for half an hour or so to miss the lengthy setting-up process – is available of the web Q&A which Paul Genge of Sony handled tonight for a UK and worldwide audience of over 450 web-browsers.

Here are some resumé details and comments made during watching the webcast:

Paul failed to understand the question about the angle of view for video. Some existing models (14 megapixel NEX for example) crop the horizontal angle of view for HD1080, they don’t just take slices off the top and bottom. The question whether the 24.3 megapixel sensor HD mode uses the full horizontal angle like the 16 megapixel Alpha 55 remains unanswered.

Flash sync socket combined with auto gain for manual live view in place of manual mode exposure simulation does allow studio work with the A77.

Question about the SLT and light loss is not answered clearly – the correct answer is that additional gain is applied, so in effect, the mirror does result in higher noise levels. But this has not proved to be noticeable in the A55.

Paul implies that Sony has not yet designed the next generation of full frame cameras – but later on, confirms that there definitely will be one. No-one asked about the megapixel possibilities…

No audio input level control (auto gain, 5v mic phantom power via 3.5mm stereo jack). Not much was made of this but it is the killer feature of the Canon 60D and 600D, enabling these cameras to film amplified music gigs with clean sound despite the clipping and overdrive potential of small condensors in high sound pressure. Manual volume setting is very important as music gigs are a big, big use of HD video.

Black 18-55mm kit lens will be exclusive to the NEX-7.

Firmware upgrade for NEX-3, NEX-5 and NEX-C3 will allow use of the LA-EA2.

A77 and A65 use electronic sensor based video stabilisation, not physical piezo actuation and movement of the sensor on the carriage, to reduce sensor overheating but provide IS. This may answer the question about the video HD crop, as this type of stabilisation can only be effective if the sensor is substantially larger than the image area. If this stabilisation is proposed for stills, it could result in variable crops of the image area. But no-one was asking questions at this level.

A77 MR Memory Recall – three custom setups saved, as with current Canon models. but not as convenient as the Alpha 900 with its three physical dial memory positions. Better than pure screen-menu chosen memory settings though.

Paul is now calling NEX ‘necks’ not ‘any eggs’. Good, that’s how we have always said it!

24.3 megapixel sensor creates 27.6MB raw file size, 38MB when also shooting a typical fine JPEG.

A77 movie exposure modes (P, A, S, M) can only be used if the camera is set to Manual focus; it is possible to re-autofocus during a take, but the brightness and settings appear to change.

ISO in finder, but OLED EVF can be customised to show what functions or settings you want to display, independently of what you see on the rear LCD.

Sony launches new range Alpha, NEX

All the predicted new models from Sony were unveiled today – the Alpha 77, Alpha 65, NEX-7, NEX-5n and NEX-VG20.

Those who grab the cameras will find the virtual 1.09X 100% field of view given by the OLED finders looks to be visually 10% bigger than the largest APS-C viewfinders made, an experience close to using a full frame DSLR with an optical prism (1.09X at 23mm eyepoint).

The Alpha 77 is launched with the new 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM (not SAM as rumoured!) lens, and the Alpha 65 shares the same new 2.3 megapixel OLED viewfinder technology. The burst speed of the 77 is revealed to be 12 frames per second (predictions have ranged from 10 to 15) with the A65 achieving 10. The new 19-point, 11-cross point AF module is fitted to the A77 only, the A65 has a simpler 15-point, 3-cross module.

Both have the 24.3 megapixel CMOS sensor also found in the new NEX-7 model, but only the A77 allows ISO 50 capture (all allow 16,000). The A77 has a fully articulated 3-way swivelling rear screen and the A65 a simpler 2-directional hinge. HD video is upgraded to full 50/60 frames 1080 progressive (no longer 25/30p or 1080i) with full manual control.

The A77 has a semipro spec 1/8,000th shutter speeded to 1/250th for X sync, and rated for 150,000 cycles (tests will probably showe it uses a hybrid electronic/mechanical timing method to reduce shutter wear, but you’ll have to look elsewhere to confirm that, as we are not at the launch event). It has the expected GPS onboard.

The A65 is regular plastic-skin construction (see strap lugs, above) but the A77 is moisture/dust sealed and so, according to the information, are ther 16-50mm and the new HVL-F43AM flash and VG-C77AM vertical grip. The 77 uses full size NP-FM500H batteries.

Key points: auto ISO remains 100-1600 not expanded in range on the A65, but can be user set for 100-12,800 on the A77, which also has separately set 50 and 16,000 options plus a multishot 25,600 (the A65 also has this high speed mode). The A77 offers JPEG Extra Fine, the A65 does not.

The viewfinder magnification (eyepiece/screen combination) is not stated but is superior to the A55 with a half-inch OLED.

On the A77 only, exposure bracketing has been expanded to 3 frames at 2EV and 3EV intervals, in addition to 3 or 5 frames at 1/3, 1/2, or 2/3 EV; the A65 offers only 1/3 or 2/3 for 3 frames. Peculiarly, neither offers 1 EV bracketing.

The A77 or A65 normal motordrive with full AF/AE is 8fps (slow speed 3fps), the higher speeds are obtained with Continuous Advance Priority (fixed settings during burst). Both can achieve 13 raws, 17 fine JPEGs before slowing.

It doesn’t look as if either accepts the HVL-F58AM as a wireless controller, but both have built-in wireless. The rumour of CF card compatibility in the A77 was false, the cameras have dual MemoryStick PRO Duo/SD drives.

The NEX-7

The professional NEX has the 24.3 megapixel sensor, ultra-fast response with startup and focus time improvements, the same OLED viewfinder as the A77/65 built in to the body, the same full HD 1080/50/25p movie (Europe, 60/30 US) and the same sensitivity range as the A77. Manual refocusing is possible during video, 10fps bursts can be shot, and a leather case turns the camera into a Leica-like for eye level use.

The NEX-7 has the slower 1/4,000th with 1/160th sync shutter found in the A65 so it’s not all professionally-biased. And it’s got a small buffer, allowing a mere 6 raw frames or 4 raw+JPEG in a burst, 10 JPEGs at Fine res (no Extra Fine option is offered).

All the pre-existing bells and whistles remain included, such as Sweep Pan, 3D Pan, etc.

Please note: the OLED viewfinder on all these cameras is a power hog. With the NEX, for example, the rated battery life is 350 images using the finder, 430 images using the rear screen. The bigger battery of the A77 can still only power 470 shots (because of GPS?) where the A65 manages a respectable 510. Switching to the rear screen for composition increases these figures to 530 and 560.

There is NO new updated standard lens for the NEX and the existing 18-55mm will fight it out with the increased 24 megapixels!

The NEX-5n

The 16.1 megapixel sensor, also found in the new video VG20 model, gets into the updated NEX-5 which has the same improvements in response time and focusing as the 7 (claimed doubling of readout speed from the CD-AF system).

Its USP appears to be the ability to simulate a preview of adjustments on the screen and adjust them using touch control. It has 10fps burst.

A new battery powered LE-EA2 adaptor which allows autofocus with ALL Alpha lenses including Minolta body-drive types back to 1985 is also to be available, above. It includes a downward-facing SLT pellicle mirror (don’t know why they did not use this design in regular cameras) and a Phase Detect AF module so the NEX can behave exactly like an Alpha 55. Note the screw drive focus coupling.

Looks like a decent lens-line-up, but me, I prefer more pancakes for my breakfast, not just a stack on one…

Along with the two new NEX models, the Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8, the Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS and the telephoto zoom E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS are to be launched. Availability of the new NEX gear should be quick – from September for the 5n, November for the 7.

The NEX-VG20

Aye well, it’s 16 megapixel video formfactor model as per VG10. See the info online. It claims the best ever video from such a camera – but they say the same about the ‘still’ models and they are probably right.

Sorry about a few of Sony’s uncropped image files with loads of white round them, they always do this and we will crop them later. But I’m due 100 miles away for a major Associateship and Fellowship annual judging to see some good photography and I have already made myself late with this! The article will be revised tonight. – David
